When it comes to texting, browsing, emailing, streaming or making voice calls, providing a reliable wireless experience within the underground transport system is key for passengers to stay connected while travelling. Safety legislation also mandates a comprehensive communication system for emergency services within the tunnels. As a result, we have created a complex multi-band infrastructure that supports multiple wireless networks operating from VHF to UHF bands, as well as FM re-broadcast and cellular services. To achieve this seamless coverage experience, dedicated in-building solutions using high-performance POI combiners and high-power optical repeaters enables the sharing of the wireless telecom infrastructure to reduce CAPEX and ensure that all technology platforms can be co-located with minimum mutual interference between systems, hence providing good user experience. In the tunnel sections, leaky cable solutions are used to deliver consistent signal levels inside the train cabins. High system reliability is also expected of a metro solution due to the difficulty in making repair works in the tunnel as trains are operational. To achieve this, Rosenberger’s metro tunnel solution provides redundancies and hot standby to critical sub-systems to ensure a reliable communication link while the train is operation. With high-speed train systems traversing through rural and mountainous regions, communications are often disrupted due to blockages, resulting in a loss of mobile coverage. The BTS-hotel concept using fiber optical repeaters with high gain bi-directional antennas are used to achieve consistent and reliable coverage along the tracks of the train system. This also minimizes the frequent handovers experienced when travelling in a high-speed train served by neighbouring macro cell sites. Off-air repeaters can also be installed as digital in-train repeaters to amplify the weak signals outside to serve mobiles inside the train. This can also be used in conjunction with the above BTS hotel concept, which will increase the site-to-site distance within each BTS Hotel network. LTE MIMO can also be implemented with 2 units of repeater in each train cabin. In-Train repeaters can support up to quad-band systems.
